We're on our own today, before our son, Mike and his family come in late tonight or tomorrow.  We decided to explore the island and get a little acquainted with it, and it was a very nice day.  This is a beautiful place with lots of diversity, that we shouldn't get bored.  There are also a lot of people!  We even went on the 'quiet side' and that was busy! I guess it's summer time.  We found a few earthcaches and virtual caches and that qualified us for another souvenir for the 15 years of geo-caching.  It also brought us to some very scenic places.  There is something about the ocean that is hard to explain.  From what we saw today, we did feel that the west coast is more rugged and the waves more brutal as they hit the shore.  Maybe today was a calm day, and we haven't seen it all yet!  We did walk across the sandbar that gave Bar Harbor its name.  When the tide goes out, the water level drops enough that people walk over to Bar Island.  One mustn't leave their car parked on the bar, as it only takes about 1 1/2 hours for the tide to start to rise and it's been known to happen that cars get flooded out and people get stranded on the island!  We can relate to this by our trips to Door Co. and going to Cana Island, as it's the same thing.  We have a good feel for the island after today's jaunt, and look forward to sharing our experiences with our son and his family.

A great view from our short hike down to the ocean.

The rugged coast at high tide.

This was as close as we could get to the only Fjord in the United States.  It's right here in Acadia National Park.  Of course, a geo-cache brought us here.  How else would we know about this?

Jim had to show his GPS for a geo-cache, while standing on the sandbar at 'The Bar at Bar Harbor'.  See those dark clouds looming on the horizon?  It really puts a little more pizazz to our pictures.
